Italy bound!

Today, I return to Italy. Later this week, I will embark on a several hundred mile walk from Florence to Rome. My journey begins at the Basilica di Santa Croce and winds through the lovely Italian countryside, ending at the Basilica di San Pietro, in Vatican City. I will follow la Via di Francesco, the Way of (Saint) Francis, a journey described as an adventure, a hike, a pilgrimage and a life changing experience.

Good for me

When something is good, it is pleasing, favorable and positive. This pilgrimage will undoubtedly be good for my being. I anticipate that this journey will challenge my mind and body and will strengthen my spirit, my relationship with God. I will garner a deeper appreciation of our beautiful world and increased respect for the Italian culture.

It will also help me to grow in both independence and dependence on my husband. He will join me for a portion of this journey, for which I am grateful, as we rarely hike long distances separately. But I will complete the majority of the trek alone, developing confidence as I navigate along a new path. My dependence upon my husband of 36 years is certain to increase, as he is my best friend and my life companion. Knowing that he honors, respects and encourages this journey gives me the strength and excitement to proceed.

Good for others

The word, good, also means something that is morally right and advantageous to someone. I would like this journey to also be a benefit to others. Therefore, I am dedicating my 400 mile pilgrimage to those without access to clean water.

Did you know that more than 2 billion people live with water insecurity? Many walk for hours each day, hauling 40 pound jugs of water collected from streams, rivers and seep holes. Sadly, most of this water is not sanitary or safe to drink, but what choice do they have?

In the United States, we have access to an abundance of water at the flip of a lever. Can you help make fresh water a reality for communities without access to this basic need?

$5 provides a year of fresh water for one person. Imagine how many lives we can change by raising $10,000!

About Water For Good

Water for Good, formed in 2003, is a nonprofit that not only drills wells, but does so relying on all local staff that provide regular well maintenance. The local staff build relationships with communities, and work with them to start projects that will prosper and empower the community long-term. When people have power over their well and begin to assert that same power in their life choices, it’s transformative for a community.  Water for Good’s goal is to ensure clean, lasting water for every man, woman, and child in the Central African Republic.
