We were headed to Napa for several days in early November, but the journey there took an unexpected turn. Our original plan was to fly to Reno and spend five days exploring Lassen Volcanic National Park. An unseasonably early and powerful snowstorm forced us to cancel the flight and pivot quickly, rebooking to San Francisco instead.
We had no lodging or plans in place before our Napa stay. We headed north along the coast and happened upon Stinson Beach. What started as a logistical solution turned into one of the most memorable pauses of the trip. It remains a favorite memory among all of our coastal California visits. The stay was so enjoyable that we shifted our plans once again. We canceled the San Francisco hotel the night before departure so that we could return to Stinson Beach one last time..

A Bit of History
Stinson Beach sits on land that was once part of the Coast Miwok people’s territory. European settlement began in the mid-1800s when Nathan H. Stinson purchased land along the coast. The town developed slowly, with early tourism boosted by the Mount Tamalpais and Muir Woods Railway in the late 1890s. After the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, refugees settled in the area, and by 1916 the community was officially named Stinson Beach. The National Park Service took over protection of surrounding lands in 1977, preserving the coastline and forest for future generations.
Where the Coast Meets the Pacific
Stinson Beach is located just north of San Francisco along the Marin Coast, where the land calmly meets the Pacific. The drive winds through coastal hills and eucalyptus groves before opening to a long stretch of sand backed by quiet neighborhoods and open sky.
Mornings arrive softly. Deer wander freely along the surrounding cliffs and toward the water. Fresh hoof prints traced the beach each day—small reminders of how closely wildlife and daily life coexist. Fog rolls in and out, waves keeping a steady rhythm. Time feels unhurried.
The beach itself is wide and welcoming, offering long stretches of sand and an unhurried pace. The shoreline in early November is quiet. An occasional resident strolls along with a dog. The water’s edge is dotted with sand dollars. Sandpipers, and seagulls moving easily between shore and sky.

During our stay, we booked a room at The Sandpiper, a small, relaxed property that fit the pace of the town perfectly. The cozy suite included a kitchenette. An electric “wood stove” took the chill off cool coastal evenings and made it easy to settle in after long beach walks.
From Sunrise to Sunset
Mornings began by watching the sun rise over Bolinas Bay, a quiet start before the day unfolded. Breakfast at Parkside Café followed. Sometimes it focused on fueling the day with quinoa and sautéed vegetables. Other times, it leaned into comfort with thick-cut French toast and fresh berries.
Mid-morning marked the start of each day’s adventures that stretched well into the afternoon. With trailheads and mountain routes close at hand, Stinson Beach served as an ideal home base for exploring beyond town. Evenings brought a return to the shoreline for sunset, followed by a relaxed dinner in town as the pace naturally slowed again.
Trails That Lead Beyond Town
One of Stinson Beach’s greatest strengths is its location. Trails leave directly from town and climb quickly into the surrounding hills, linking the coast to forested ridges.
From here, it’s easy to explore destinations like Muir Woods, Muir Beach, Mount Tamalpais State Park, Point Reyes National Seashore, and the Marin Headlands. Whether heading out for a half-day hike or a longer loop through redwoods and coastal views, Stinson Beach offers a rare balance of oceanfront calm and mountain access.

Visiting With Dogs
- North End (Upton Beach): leashed dogs are allowed on the sand and in the surf. This is the primary dog-friendly section of the beach
- Parking Lot and Picnic Areas: Leashed dogs are permitted at the main Stinson Beach site
- South End (National Park Service section): Dogs are not allowed on the sand in this area
Dogs should remain leashed at all times. Visitors are encouraged to be mindful of wildlife, other beachgoers, and current regulations, which may change seasonally.
